I use my Sprint Pantech PX-500 as my only internet service at home and at my office (I am self employed). I've been using a WRT54G3G-ST at my office for about a year and a half. I've been thinking about getting another one for my home but I am hesitant because I may upgrade my PCMCIA modem to a USB modem. I want USB because some of my machines have a PCMCIA slot, some have an ExpressCard slot, some don't have a slot at all, but all have USB. Also, I am interested in those cheap UMPC's that have become available recently (Asus EEE, etc) and those only have USB. And, WiMax (aka Xohm) is supposed to be coming out in my area later this year and I expect their modems to be either ExpressCard or USB. So my question is, should I spend $120 for another WRT54G3G-ST or get an ordinary WRT54G on ebay for a lot less and then set up for Windows Internet Connection Sharing?
Any opinions? |

If your plan is to subscribe to WiMax later then none of the gear you can buy today will be compatible. Probably the only thing that will be is ICS with a standard router since you will be routing the signal after receiving it with a WiMax device. Ideally, if it can be done, a firmware upgrade to a Cradlepoint router (making it compatible) would make the choice for me. But I don't know if that is even possible. If Xohm/Cearwire is not in your future I'd take the $120, apply it toward a Cradlepoint, and get a USB device. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

cradlepoint routers needed only a firmware upgrade to go from being EVDO only, to EVDO and HSPA, even though the technologies are "different".
so long as wimax devices are made available as USB or expresscard devices, i personally expect that firmware will be made available to support wimax through the cradlepoint's, and i'd bet they do it quickly. |
