I've been using a cantenna to find towers and study antenna placement too. Hadn't thought about just mounting the cantenna where I was thinking about putting an antenna. Great idea. Have you thought about lightning protection? (I live in central Florida. Everything gets hit sooner or later.) If the can were mounted on an aluminum mast driven into the ground, and the modem was suspended so that niether it nor the cable was closer to the can than 1/2" or so, would the can shield the modem adequately?
