| I totally agree with the EDGE vs 1RXTT, I can Game on ATT and I actually get about 275k+ on a good day. But because of the cap and the fact that you already have ISDN, keeping that is a no brainier for an entire family. |

| Well, I went with Verizon EVDO. If you look at my original post, it is from over a year ago, lol. When I signed up, it was listed as unlimited with the option to reduce speed if you exceed 5gb/month. Hopefully, when the two years are up they will allow me to continue on the same contract and not add in the overage charges....only time will tell. |

As for 1xRTT vs 128k, I would stick with ISDN hands down. ISDN has some of the best latency out there, much better than 1xRTT I believe and still better than EVDO. Such fast latency can make a slow connection feel like a much faster one and vice versa. ISDN is also really reliable. If yours is like mine, my ISDN has -never- dropped unless there was a lightning strike that hit just right nearby. I don't think 1xRTT is quite that reliable. If the cost of ISDN isn't hurting you too badly I would stick with it unless it comes to choosing between ISDN and EVDO... |
ISDN, along with other wireline services, are under tariff by the states they are provided in. The state PUC's set the rates that they can be sold under and are most often higher than broadband rates.
One advantage tarrfed items have over cell systems is that they are under state requirements to be repaired in under a certain time period.
One such example would be the 5 million and change penalty levied against Verizon by the state of Florida for various violations of PUC regulations surrounding telecommunication services.
This ain't DSL, EVDO, cable, or even the vaunted fiber optic services. The wireline services are guaranteed up time by the state and there is legal clout behind these regulations and the states have used them time and time again. Partly why the telecoms want to get away from them and offer services that they don't have to mess around with too much when customers complain about service issues.
You get ISDN, Frame relay, or even a T1, you are guaranteed service, hands down. It breaks, they got a finite time limit to restore it. The telecoms hate them with a passion. |

I would keep ISDN.
I am running on 1xrtt. It would be awesome to have 8KBps or more only if it had a super low latency.
In fact, 56k would be awesome if it had a really low latency.
But the fact is, latency matters a heck of a lot more than bandwidth. (unless your below 4 KBps bandwidth) Satellite has already proven that you could have a million gazillion KBps but have a latency higher than 2000ms that kills the whole deal. (no games, no voice chat, no video chat, surfing is slow)
ISDN is notorious for having a REALLY low latency, as it runs on a dedicated digital line. If you have unlimited per month, just keep it and don't bother with EVDO or 1xRTT. Sure, youtube might be a bit slow, but if you have unlimited you don't have to be like "alright, so I can watch...4 videos a day..."
If they could just improve dial up to having a latency of under 200ms with 10KBps or more I would be using that right now instead of 1xrtt. |
