Last week I got my Sierra Compass 597. After installing and attempting to connect I would get an error message indicating a password was incorrect, but Smartview never asked for a password!

I ended up spending over 3 hours on calls with Sprint's tech support to try to get it working. It worked for all of one hour. Then same error message all over again. Spent another 4 hours on the phone with Sprint. No one seemed to be able to help with a workable solution.

I finally gave up after 7 hours on the phone with at least 10 different people! I have cancelled the account and will send back the device tomorrow. I am very disappointed that the 597 has failed for me because my Earthlink/Hughsnet DW6000 is no longer supported and I refuse to pay for an upgrade AND deal with their refusal to provide adequate customer service.

Is it possible that the 597 is simply not compatable with my Dell Inspirion 600M? Is anyone out their finding succes with an aircard for this notebook? I am willing to try again, but need some direction.

What operating system are you running on that Dell?

You may want to consider Verizon EVDO service, or getting Sprint u727/u680 from the EVDO Experts at http://3gstore.com -- I guarantee you their tech support stands a much better chance of getting you set up.

Thanks for the quick reply! The operating system is Windows XP w/SP 3. I would be willing to try again, provided there is some degree of assurance that the device has been successfully used on a Dell 600M.

The Compass 597U is a rather easy device to work with. I can not say that the support team has anything documented that a 600M specifically was one of the devices that a customer has called in with for support.

What I can tell you is that we have seen and heard allot of activation issues and all it would take is having someone committed to getting the device working prior to shipping it out to you.

That commitment would most definitely be received from 3GStore.com Support Department.

All that it would entail is to take back your modem to the store from where you purchased, place an order for a new Sprint Compass that has been activated/tested with our sales team and give us a call in support once you have received it.

We will then do our very best to show you our expertise in troubleshooting and getting you the results you are looking for:-)

I have Compass 397 on IBM Thinkcenter XP Sp2 and had trouble in the beginning.
I had to change the Settings --> Connection Maintenance to 'Maintane established connection regardless of other network availability'

Think I disabled local area network too to get mine to first connect but have had no problems since but once the first connection was made, I made sure that the unit was updated.

Make sure that your firewall allows it.
