noob needs some advice re phone vs. modem costs

hi everyone,

i'm currently in a 2 year voice only contract with verizon and have an lg vx8700. i pay $40/mo. for 450 minutes, unlimited in-network calling. i am going to need to have some reliable wireless internet access for my laptop and am trying to figure out the best way to go about this. verizon is currently offering a deal on upgrades to blackberry phones that would require (obviously) a change to a voice/data plan.

i understand that there are some disadvantages to using a blackberry as a modem for the computer, speed being one of them. that said, i'm not in the greatest position financially. therefore, i am trying to decide whether it makes sense to get a dedicated modem and pay the $60/mo. for the wireless service (bringing my total charges to verizon to be $100/mo.) or if it makes more sense to get a blackberry and try to find a voice/data plan + broadband access (which verizon charges $15/mo. for) that was cheaper than $100/mo.

any advice on this? hopefully my dilemma makes sense.
