Hello there forum. I am a commercial truck driver who happens to also be a gamer. I am planning on getting a nice gaming laptop in the next 4 months or so but I just can't figure out which express card I should go with and which company. I'd like to go through Alltel cause I have and love their phone service but I'm just not sure. Will I be able to game wirelessly from the comfort of my truck using EVDO? And is there an unlimited plan out there? 5GB just isn't gonna be enough for a gamer like me, I'll use that up in one night. LOL.

The most direct answer to your question is "maybe". Smile

Yes you can game on EVDO. The type of game will change how you feel about it. With RevA service, you can get as low as 100ms pings, though you will likely see higher than that. For a twitch game (FPS) this may not be acceptable. For other types of games, it's just fine.

The 5GB plans *are* the 'unlimited' plans. (unlimited with a wink) If you need more than 5GB a month you currently need to purchase a second modem and account. But I doubt gaming alone is going to get you anywhere near that limit. What really chews up you allotment is video streaming/downloading and/or downloading big files. Most games really send very little data.

That's about as much as I can say given the limited detail you provided.

I play games on the Xbox 360 and PC all the time and have no problems at all. I play mostly FPS and rarely notice any lag. I have played everything from FEAR to COD4, UT3, Ghost Recon, BF:BC, Halo 3 and tons others. Also, you might be surprised at just how long 5GB will let you game. I have NEVER gone over my 5GB/month limit and I play games almost every day (except the weekends). Here is roughly why:

Games usually won't require anymore than 64 kbits/s to play, which is why ping is the deciding factor on how well you play, not download speed. So, with that you can play 3 hours a day for 30 days and only use up about 2.5 GB. This could change depending on the data required to run voice chat.

So, to make a long story short, yes you can play games with EVDO RevA and you should be able to play without lag given your ping is decent. My ping is usually around 120-150ms when I ping yahoo or google, and I have hardly any problems at all with lag during my games. Hope that helps.

jon8105 is correct.
I use verizon and game alot. "pc and ps3" When on the road I play wwiionline"fps mmo", lotro "mmo,CoD4,Grid'' with no problem and don't go over my 5g cap with downloading patches. The looks I get playing on my notebook in Flying- J's or Pilot is priceless.
If you looking for a nice gaming notebook checkout Gateway's FX series. They have a powerful GPU for gaming for a great price. I got mine 4 month's ago for $1240.00 and it has a 8800 GTS in it.
