I live off the beaten path and have no other access to broadband. (24014)
My wife has a Verizon phone and we get about a bar and one half in the house.
The verizon map says I have broadband coverage.

Given that I had the following questions:
• What is the best service to have?
• Are all the contracts 2 year or is there another route?
• I take it the companies let you cancel in the first 30 days for any reason?
• Are boaster antennas a good idea?
• I will want to share with several computers in the house. At first I guess I can carry the modem around; latter what would be a good wireless router?
• What else should someone as green as me be thinking about?

Thanks very much for your help.

I am a former hughesnet customer sent to Verizon because of a satellite failure. I signed up for one year with a UM150 modem but paid an extra $100 for the privlege. I too had 1 to 2 bars in the house and ordered a wilson signal booster with external antenna and now have full bars (ssi=73) and am getting 1.2M/500 sometimes, mostly 500k/300k with pings of approx. 350. This is plenty fast for us and can live with the 5G cap. The plan I bought had a 14 day return with no questions asked but I have noticed in the fine print for the 30 day trials that you are allowed only to export the number to another service if you are dissatisfied. Maybe somebody else on this forum can clear this "trial period" up for you. I also bought a CTR-350 wireless router and it works great. Contact the 3G people that sponsor this forum and I believe they can help you out. Wish I would have known about them before venturing into this on my own. Good luck.
Richard

glenn,
coverage is the first thing to consider, and verizon is your best option at your zipcode.

We make it easy to understand all the "pieces" in our "Easy EVDO" article at http://www.evdoinfo.com/easy

Verizon offers a one-year contract at the same $59.99/mo but charges more up front for the evdo device... for most of our customers, it makes more sense to sign up for two years, get the maximum discount up front, and if you still want out after a year, you'll have the option to pay $115 (after 12th month) to terminate contract early.

Yes, verizon's service comes with a 30-day trial period.

Yes, its likely to make sense to have the booster antenna, because maximum speeds depend on best signal, and just going from outdoors to indoors affects signal for most customers.

These are the best cellular routers: http://www.EVDOinfo.com/cradlepoint

Most customers get the MBR1000 for home use, but many choose the CTR500 so they have something smaller they can take with them on trips.

You've got the bases covered... only thing you should consider is sending your full street address to sales@ 3gstore.com so we can ensure coverage is at your actual home, and not just in the area.

We look forward to serving you as a http://3gstore.com customer!

That is a good point; does anyone know if you can just cancel the service if it does not work out without going to another carrier? I think there is only one carrier at my location.
