Hey all new to this forum and EVDO have been a long time satellite user for internet broadband and decided enuff was enuff so I switched this week to Alltel but have a few newbie questions
1) I'm 3 1/2 miles from a tower and 2 miles from a antenna I'm gettin 5 bar signal but which of these two gives me the best signal the tower or the antenna
2) My RSSI 1XEVDO is 75 dBm is this good can it be improved
3) Can EVDO be networked using ICS (internet connection sharing) thru XP I have a Linksys Wireless-B Access Point and a Linksys switch for eithernet....I have 2 laptops I want to hook together with my desktop
4) It says I'm on 1XEVDO coverage my speeds average 825 kbps will these speeds increase when Alltel upgrades my tower .... talked to the rep said it will happen in 3 months
5) Last question I travel allot with my laptop and most areas I travel to are Verzon and Sprint areas will I roam onto their system with my um150 |

An antenna can help maintain that signal no matter the situation. This means perfect signal even during rain, snow, etc.

Maximum signal.. can not be improved further. (well it can, but won't do anything)

Verizon owns Alltel now. You'll be able to use EVDO from Verizon towers sometime this year or next year. Sprint agreement is for 1x only. So it'll be slow, but you'll have internet.
Also there is no roaming charges like cell phones on modem data plans. |

verizon doesn't own alltel now. their purchase still needs fcc approval and its being contested. it will be summer 2009 or later before its a "done deal".

| if you are on xp consider looking at the speed increase guide in the forums here. unless your tower is just congested, you should be able to squeeze out better speeds than that. |

Do not do the retarded tweaks. They'll do nothing but screw up your winsock2.
This isn't the age of 1980 and 56k. All those "tweaks" are done automatically between the server and the modem.
As a matter of fact. Those "tweaks" halved my speeds. Not exactly a desirable "boost".
My mistake then. |

Sprint is Alltel's major roaming partner at the moment. You can data roam on Sprint's EVDO service.
Roaming on Verizon is currently only at 1x in most areas but there was some talk about changing that after the merger announcement -- meaning there might be a Verizon/Alltel EVDO roaming agreement that goes into effect pre-merger.
The tweaks can work. I changed one of my settings on one of my laptops and went from sub-500 kbps downloads to 1800 kbps downloads. In my case the laptop was originally set up for dial-up access and had a receive window that was too small.
RE Q1.> Unless the tower is EvDO and the antenna is 1x (or vice versa) there probably won't be much difference unless the backhaul is different. |

Are you saying that it could be this long before they get approval from the FCC now? Others I hear from are saying end of the year, but I doubt they have the contacts you do. |

Well, here's a for instance.
Verizon announced the purchase of "Rural Cellular" in July of 2007, and just recently got FCC clearance for that deal to go through:

This sort of deal is not typically short n sweet. |

| I figured it wouldn't be quick, but to hear everyone say it, they think it would happen quick just in case the next administration wouldn't be as friendly to big corporations, and the people placed in charge of the FCC then wouldn't be as likely to approve it. |
