Hi folks,
I read in another post where people were throwing away the VZAccess software and using regular dial-up networking to connect to broadband.
I set up a connection to test it today, using number #777 and no user/password, and it worked. I was able to connect this way and seemed to get decent speeds, but after every 30 seconds like clockwork, I get disconnected. I get disconnected even when i'm in the middle of downloading something. That's no good. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? It almost seems like it would be something Verizon implemented, yet i've seen no mention of anyone else running into this issue. |

I tethered my Q the same way w/o the vzam just a normal dial up connection over #777 w/o name and password. I got fairly decent sppeds and never a disconnect as long as I cared to keep it connected.
Come to think of it I tried it with a PC card too and didn't have any problems there either. Didn't keep the card though.
Sorry I don't have an answer except to say it sounds strange for that to be happening. Does it happen when the VZAM is running too? |

After I created the dial-up networking connection, I loaded VZAccess Manager and it showed my new connection on the Available Networks page along with the normal 'NationalAccess - BroadbandAccess' one.
I tried dialing on the VZAccess manager with the new connection I had made and it worked. No disconnects.
For some reason it only disconnects me every 30 seconds when i'm using the dial-up networking connection manually (ie, clicking on it from Network Connections and dialing). |

| I will say this. If you are in Auto mode before you make the new DUN ( dial up networking connection) hit cntrl D while the VZaccess mgr is up on your desktop. Use diagvzw as the password and go to settings. Once in there go to HDR mode only. Connect once in HDR mode. Once you have doen this, your card is temporarily configure to REVA only. At this point create a new dil up with #777 and no user name and password. You will connect almost instantly and be on the highspeed network all the time. |

onedavester, I followed your directions to a 'T'. I had hopes that this might fix it, since the previous time I tried the DUN connection, I had the modem set on Auto. However, once again, it is still disconnecting me every 30 seconds despite the modem being in HDR mode.
I really wish I could figure out a way to get this to work since I dislike using unnecessary software, and I think using the DUN connection with ICS would work better than with Verizon's software. Would you have any other ideas? |

I dial direct and use ICS and have have stayed connected for days. Ive done hour long downloads with no problems.
go to network connections, select properties on the evdo connection, then to the Options tab and make sure "idle time before hanging up" is set to "never."
also check under the Advanced tab and make sure "allow other network users to control or disable the shared network connection" is unchecked. maybe some other computer on the network is messing with it. |

I finally got this to work by installing the software on another computer.
I can't really tell a difference in speed and latency though, and not being able to as easily check usage/signal strength is definitely a downside. If I hadn't had such good luck with the Verizon software keeping the computers on my LAN connected I would probably be more thrilled about it. |
