I have a M825 Yagi, on a 20' low loss cable pointing to a Verizon tower 2.4 miles away. I am using a UM150 with a Wilson 3watt amp.
The problem is after taking several hours of aiming I have determined that the tower must have a problem.
I have 3 bars or -79db when in HDR only mode but can never connect in HDR mode. When I go back to automatic, I can hook up with no problems.
Verizon said to remove my DUN and re-run the wizard to create a new DUN. This does not help.
The next thing I will say may be odd to some folks but what is happening is that the tower puts out a great signal for a few minutes, then it goes down to -103 or worse. Then it comes right back. I even have hit -59 a few times but it just goes away and comes back on about a 10 minute interval.
How am I supposed to convince Verizon to look into this one? or a little help is appreciated. |

Try to determine if indeed the problem is the tower or your modem. If you can, drive to the tower or get closer to it with modem/laptop and see if you get the same results. If the issue goes away then you are having signal issues at home. If it does not, you need another device (buddy's modem, evdo phone) to double check. If both get same results, it is likely a tower issue and you need to escalate the call to Verizon. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

It sounds to me like you might have a strong but non-preferred site (roaming?) that is getting handed off to a weaker but preferred one, depending upon the varying signal strength of the weaker one.
Does it do the same thing if you turn roaming off?

| This is in HDR mode. In Auto, it connects flawlessly and intermittently connects to revA, but is mostly on National Access. |

OK. Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with Verizon to recognize the acronyms.
Still, given the signal strengths it makes me wonder about the PRL and handoff setup.
Jim's suggestion about getting close to a tower and verifying that it works OK would help eliminate this variable. Furthermore, if you have access to a ##DEBUG# mode, it would be useful to see which PN corresponds to which kind of connection - essentially mapping the towers to the service type. You can probably drive close to candidate towers and, using as little antenna as possible, only connect to the local tower to map PN's (and network IDs) to tower/segments. Knowing this you can at least figure out what carrier and service is where and perhaps what is going on with the handoffs and maybe what to do about it.
Jim's other suggestion about getting a different card (same carrier) as a tiebreaker could also be useful.

| I am going to swap out the UM150 as a place to start. I can do this at the store because I am in my trial period. If still no joy, I will do the tower trip once again and see if the RevA signal is going in and out right at the tower. |

| Ok I switched out the cards and determined that I probably just have a lot of vegetative growth in the way. |
